Manchester United give team news vs Watford plus Paul Pogba and Raphael Varane injury updates

Manchester United have a number of injury doubts ahead of their Premier League fixture at Watford on Saturday.

Raphael Varane (hamstring) and Paul Pogba (thigh) are out while Luke Shaw has not appeared in training footage this week after he suffered a concussion in the defeat to Manchester City 13 days ago.

Edinson Cavani missed the City match and was not included in the Uruguay squad for their World Cup qualifiers against Bolivia and Argentina due to a tendon injury.

"This week has been really positive," United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said. "There are a couple of doubts with illnesses and small niggles. Paul is out for a while, Rapha is out for a while, apart from that players will be coming back in the near future, some this weekend, some in the week, but that's the same for other players."

Solskjaer returned to his native Norway in the first week of the international fortnight while a number of United players who were not involved for their nations embarked on breaks abroad.

The United board have resisted sacking Solskjaer but are believed to have started the process to identify a successor after a woeful start to the season.

Despite four defeats in the last six Premier League games, Solskjaer was characteristically upbeat at his pre-match press conference.

"Of course, I've been in contact and communicated with the club as I do all the time anyway," he clarified. "It's been a long international break but it's one that we've utilised and used to our benefit, we feel. It's been a good response from the players who have come in and we're ready for the Watford game.

"International breaks are always periods to refresh and to keep working on different things. This time around we had a few players having to pull out, so quite a few of them have been here doing individual sessions, recovery sessions, rehab sessions, some players were allowed to go abroad to visit their families.

"It's the same case all the time when we come in the week before we start the game again, everyone's bright and ready. This week has been a good week, we've had a chance to work on quite a few things with everyone.

"The players, the staff, myself, the club, we are working towards one goal and that's for this team to improve, to get better results. Fans are still supporting the team and the club, they've been through this period, backed the team through the rebuild.

"When you lose a game, you're always disappointed and under pressure. We've been communicating well, openly and honestly, as we always do. There's one game that matters and it's also what goes on after that.

"We're all refreshed. This week has been really good for training and we're ready for tomorrow.

"Of course, we know that with a poor run of form we put ourselves under pressure, that pressure should be a joy, it should be something that makes us a better team, makes every player perform at the best level and it's a game we should go into and enjoy.

"I don't know how many games we've had away from home. Of course, we lost to Leicester, but the unbeaten away record we accumulated before that is something we need to draw confidence from.

"We've got three away games now, with Watford the first one. Watford is a very big game, as every game in the Premier League is."
