Manchester United give team news and Edinson Cavani update ahead of Southampton fixture

Edinson Cavani has started training with Manchester United after an absence of more than six weeks.

The 34-year-old returned to England earlier this month but only reported at United's Carrington training complex earlier this week.

Uruguay were eliminated from the Copa America at the quarter-finals but Cavani was granted extended leave due to personal reasons.

The striker is unlikely to travel to Southampton for United's second Premier League fixture of the season. Jadon Sancho is in contention to make his full debut and Raphael Varane could be included in the squad.

"With regards to team news, that's given us a boost as well," United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said. "Edinson's joined in, Raphael's joining in, we're getting fitter and fitter.

"You'll see on Sunday (if Sancho and Varane start), they've worked well. They've had minutes, we've had a very good week ourselves, we'll see who makes the flight down to Southampton on Sunday.

"Edinson's always looked after himself and, of course, he is lacking in team training, football training, but he's been looking after himself.

"He had different reasons to why he came late, there were some personal reasons. And his body can tolerate a lot. It was something that was not physically, it was a different matter.

"He's chomping at the bit, he's ready to train, he's ready to go and let's see how much we can get out of him early on."

The Manchester Evening News reported Dean Henderson has started light training after being laid low by Covid-19 symptoms for the best part of a month and Solskjaer confirmed his return.

"I think the whole situation around Covid is still unknown and it's new for everyone, that's the scary bit," Solskjaer added. "We don't really know the effects. You hear people, less fit people than footballers, have it and no symptoms and then you have fit footballers get side-effects, tiredness, it's a scary disease and virus. We need to be careful.

"With Dean, he was tired after training, he felt that and we needed to check him up. Now he feels much better, he's passed all the tests we've gone through with him and he's training, building himself up again because he's lost a few weeks, he's working hard in the gym and out on the grass. He's not with full team training yet but he won't be too long."
