Manchester United give Scott McTominay boost and team news vs Watford

Scott McTominay could make his Manchester United comeback from injury against Watford on Sunday.

McTominay, 23, has been sidelined since he sustained knee ligament damage in the 4-1 win over Newcastle United on December 26 but trained with the first-team earlier this week.

The Scotland international did not travel to Bruges for United's Europa League round-of-32 first leg in midweek but McTominay established himself as a first-teamer towards the end of last season and could be available for inclusion against Watford this weekend.

"I think he might be in the squad," Solskjaer said. "He had a rest day today, so let's see how he is tomorrow. Mason's been ill. I'm not surprised because that's the type [McTominay] is.

"He's a physical specimen. He's a leader, he never shirks a tackle and he brings everyone with him. He can sit with Nemanja [Matic] or Fred, or he can be one of the runners in midfield.

"We're talking about that today, that we don't have that many runs past the striker. He used to be a striker before, so he's used to being in the box."

Axel Tuanzebe, Timothy Fosu-Mensah, and Paul Pogba are unlikely to be available against 19th-placed Watford, who beat United 2-0 on December 22 at Vicarage Road.

United forward Jesse Lingard squandered a presentable chance with the scoreline goalless at Watford two months ago in a game that David de Gea dropped a clanger and Aaron Wan-Bissaka gifted Watford a penalty.

"That was a very disappointing game," Solskjaer acknowledged. "We should've won that one. We gifted them their two goals and had chances to put away ourselves.

"But you can't win games if you don't take your chances."

Possible United XI: De Gea, Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Bailly, Maguire, Shaw, Matic, Fred, Fernandes, James, Martial
