Manchester United give Raphael Varane transfer announcement update

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed Raphael Varane is not available for Manchester United's Premier League opener against Leeds.

United have not registered Varane in time for the centre-back to make the squad and the transfer has still not officially been completed.

Varane bade farewell to Real Madrid staff and players two weeks ago and arrived in Manchester last week, when he had to quarantine for five days before undergoing a medical.

United had planned to announce the £43million signing of Varane on Wednesday but it has been delayed and he is still not officially a United player.

"He's not trained with us and [we haven't done] all the dots over the 'i's and we haven't crossed the 't's yet," Solskjaer said. "Things happen and things take time and unfortunately with the isolation has delayed these things.

"It's not 100% done, I can say he probably won't be involved tomorrow because he's not trained with us.

"It always happens and there are little things. The big hold up was the isolation and quarantine. He's in Manchester now, hopefully it'll be done soon."

United are expected to challenge for the title this season, having finished second last term and invested £115.9m on Varane and Jadon Sancho.

"It's always pressure before every season," Solskjaer added. "When you finish pre-season, that's just one chunk of work done, we have to get a good start, we have expectations ourselves. This club is about trophies, it's about good football and my expectations are we keep developing our style and play good football.

"You never know with results in football but hopefully when we get to March, April, May, we're there or thereabouts. The team is hungry, we've done good business, I feel confident going into the new season.

"Then again, the first couple of games are an unknown. It's a rivalry between Leeds and Man United, it's a one-off game against Marcelo's teams, he's got a unique style and I can't wait to get going."
