Manchester United give fresh Cristiano Ronaldo update before Newcastle fixture amid TV irony

Cristiano Ronaldo looks set to make his second Manchester United debut against Newcastle United after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed the Portugal superstar will be 'involved as soon as possible'.

Manchester United have already announced that the club have struck a sensational deal with Juventus to bring the 36-year-old back to Old Trafford 'subject to the agreement of personal terms, visa and medical'.

Ronaldo flew to Lisbon on Friday after Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri revealed the legendary forward had told him he had no intention of playing for the Serie A giants again.

Ronaldo, who is busy preparing for Portugal's games against Azerbaijan, Qatar and Ireland, will be able to iron out the final details of the transfer in his homeland before the window closes at 11pm on Tuesday.

Solskjaer has confirmed that Ronaldo will then touch down in Manchester a few days before the visit of Newcastle to Old Trafford on September 11 and the Red Devils' boss has warned he has not been signed 'to sit on the bench'.

"Of course, we need to get all the paperwork done, which I'm a part of, but hopefully we can get that sorted and we can announce it 100%," Solskjaer told reporters after Manchester United's 1-0 win at Wolves.

"Then he's away with Portugal playing the games. I think they've got three games. His last game is on the Tuesday. We'll get him back to Manchester with Bruno [Fernandes] and, hopefully, he will be involved as soon as possible."

While this fixture has been broadcast live in the UK in each of the last four seasons, Sky and BT decided against showing it when choosing their first round of matches before the new campaign got under way so it will take place at 3pm on the Saturday as it stands.
