Manchester United give Anthony Martial and Aaron Wan-Bissaka injury updates

Anthony Martial will not be fit for Manchester United's Europa League tie with AZ Alkmaar on Thursday.

Martial has missed the last six matches with a thigh strain he suffered in the 2-1 Premier League defeat to Crystal Palace on August 24 and United were also without Aaron Wan-Bissaka for their Premier League draw with Arsenal.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said Wan-Bissaka was unwell for the visit of Arsenal and was unsure whether he would travel to Alkmaar with the rest of the squad on Wednesday. Solskjaer suggested Martial could recover for Sunday's trip to Newcastle.

"Maybe weekend," he said. "If not, after international break. Not Europa, no. Wan-Bissaka? Not sure."

Luke Shaw resumed first-team training last week but failed to make the matchday squad against Arsenal and Diogo Dalot has sat out the last three matches through injury. Long-term absentee Eric Bailly is not expected back until the Christmas period.

Martial's lengthy absence has forced Marcus Rashford to play up front in most of United's domestic matches but he struggled so much against Arsenal he was switched to the left wing towards the end of the first-half.

Rashford has managed one goal from open play in the last 16 but Solskjaer refused to criticise the 21-year-old. "Well you've got to make a decision there and then. Marcus makes defenders fear him with his pace, sometimes he trusts his finishing, his shots.

Solskjaer: We need to learn to win

"Today, he went for a shot, maybe another time he'll take him on. It depends on what he feels right there and then. Loads of good things, bit disappointing with only one point because winning the game 1-0, but then again both teams didn't deserve to lose.
