Manchester United get new double injury worry as Michael Carrick issues Luke Shaw update

Concern: Luke Shaw was substituted early against Crystal Palace - (Getty Images)

Michael Carrick has explained that both Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire were substituted early during Sunday’s defeat of Crystal Palace because they were ‘not feeling well’.

Shaw was hooked after just 24 minutes, having come off worse from a Daniel Munoz challenge. He appeared to catch a stud to the top of his foot, and hobbled off after receiving treatment.

Maguire, meanwhile, came off after 85 minutes having produced an assured defensive display.

Speaking at full-time, though, Carrick suggested he was not at 100 per cent.

"They just weren't feeling too well,” he said, asked to explain both substitutions. “Hopefully they will be feeling better soon."

In spite of those two injury headaches, it was a broadly positive day for United. They trailed 1-0 at half-time, but came back to win thanks to goals from Bruno Fernandes and Benjamin Sesko.

Dissecting the day, Carrick continued: "I'm delighted with the win and the way we responded to a slow start.

“Credit to Palace, they started the game really sharply and bright. We showed that belief and personality and we finished the first half well.

“To overcome going a goal down so early, that was a new challenge for us. You have to do that at certain times, it has to be perfect."

The result leaves United third in the table for the time being, but Carrick is refusing to get carried away.

“It doesn't mean an awful lot at the moment. It is nice and we want to keep progressing. We came back from the goal so early and responded."
