Manchester United get Mike Phelan boost

Mike Phelan will not be continuing as sporting director of the Central Coast Mariners following his permanent appointment as Manchester United's assistant manager.

Sir Alex Ferguson's former right-hand man returned to the club in December to work alongside caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for the remainder of the season.

Phelan was linked with the technical director vacancy at Old Trafford but United announced on Friday that he had signed a three-year deal to stay as assistant manager.

The 56-year-old has been balancing that job as sporting director of the Central Coast Mariners in Australia in recent months.

Phelan, who took up the post last July, remains listed as sporting director on the Central Coast Mariners' website but Press Association Sport understands that he will not be staying on in that role with the A-League side.

Solskjaer has confirmed that Michael Carrick, Kieran McKenna and Mark Dempsey will remain part of United's coaching team along with Phelan next season.

Solskjaer brought Dempsey and Phelan back to the club following his interim appointment in December of last year, while Carrick and McKenna remained from the previous coaching arrangement.

United are looking to build on the foundations they have laid under Solskjaer and the Norwegian manager believes keeping the same personnel will be crucial in the Reds' pursuit of future success.

"They are all going to stay," Solskjaer told the United app. "I think that's important, that we keep that team going forward. We do bounce off each other and they are some excellent coaches.

"Kieran, with his 32 years of age, you'd think he's had 32 years in coaching. Demps - I've worked with him now since 2011 when I moved back to Norway, he came with me to Molde. He's a Manchester United lad through and through, he came through with Norman Whiteside and Marks Hughes in that youth team. I think he was captain and he played once for the first team. He knows what this means.

"Michael - what can I say that no-one else knows about Michael? When he cam in, it was my last season as a player so I played with him for one year. He's a personality I can really connect with."
