Manchester United get Luke Shaw injury boost

Luke Shaw expects to be fit for the start of Manchester United's season.

Shaw played through England's knockout stages of the European Championship with cracked ribs and managed a wrist injury throughout the tournament.

The 26-year-old has returned to England following a holiday on the Greek island of Mykonos and he is quarantining ahead of reporting for pre-season training at United's Carrington training complex on Monday.

Although United are yet to assess Shaw's injuries, the left-back is understood to be confident of being fit enough to start in the Premier League season opener against Leeds on August 14.

Shaw is likely to have two weeks of training in the run-up to the Leeds game, with United due to travel to St Andrews in Scotland for their second UK training camp next week.

United host Everton on August 7 in their final pre-season game at Old Trafford, when most of the England internationals and new signings Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho are expected to figure.

"Pre-season is always difficult in a championship year, never mind a pandemic, isolation," United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said after the 2-2 draw with Brentford on Wednesday night. "You can see the team tonight, there's loads of youngsters, everyone who has worked pre-season has done well and now they're coming in drips and drabs.

"We haven't got time to play catch-up. Whoever turns up late and doesn't get a proper pre-season and is not fit when they come in might struggle to get into the team, because today was a very good performance."
