Manchester United get Dean Henderson fitness boost

Dean Henderson has started light training at Manchester United after recovering from Covid-19.

Henderson tested positive in his first week back in pre-season training in mid-July but returned to United's Carrington training complex for light sessions this week.

The 24-year-old is not expected to play again until next month as United have just two more Premier League fixtures before the September internationals.

Henderson missed United's opening friendlies with Derby County and Queens Park Rangers after contracting Covid-19 and he struggled with symptoms beyond the period of isolation, so was unable to travel with the squad to United's training camp in St Andrews or appear in the final friendlies with Brentford and Everton.

New signing Tom Heaton has provided back-up for David de Gea and is expected to be on the bench again for Sunday's Premier League trek to Southampton.

United have six games in September, when their Champions League and Carabao Cup campaigns start, and Henderson could make his first appearance of the season next month.

Henderson had been told he was down to start the season as United's starting goalkeeper before he was sidelined for all of pre-season.

The England international played 26 times for United last season and De Gea started in 36 games.
