Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford asked about breaking Wayne Rooney record

Marcus Rashford would not be satisfied with becoming Manchester United's all-time top scorer if he didn't pick up some trophies along the way.

The England forward has scored 64 goals in 201 appearances for the Reds, with almost a third of those goals coming in just 31 games this season.

He is still some way behind Wayne Rooney, who netted 253 times during his 13 years at Old Trafford, and he is not overly concerned with overtaking his former United and England teammate.

"I don’t pay too much attention to that," Rashford told FourFourTwo when asked about the prospect of surpassing Rooney's tally. "If you’re playing your best football, then whatever happens, happens.

"If I was to get that record but we go into the next decade with no trophies, that’s not going to be the greatest feeling for me. If I don’t get the record but we get lots of trophies and something to look back on, that’s the most important thing.”

Rashford had elevated his game to a new level for United before a back injury curtailed his season in January.

If the 22-year-old picks back up where he left off when he finally returns to the team, his status at the club will only enhance and he was asked whether legendary status at United is something he strives to achieve.

"That’s always the aim," Rashford said. "You grow up around so many people who have that United legend status that it becomes part of your dream.

"When you dream of playing for Man United, you don’t only dream of making your debut; you dream of being like Beckham, Scholes and Giggs.

"It’s part of the dream as an academy lad."
