Manchester United forward Daniel James defends penalty decision vs Chelsea

Daniel James said referee Paul Tierney was '100 per cent' correct to award Manchester United a penalty during their Carabao Cup meeting with Chelsea on Wednesday night.

James went down in the box after a challenge by Chelsea left-back Marcos Alonso and Tierney immediately pointed to the spot.

With no VAR in operation in the Carabao Cup this season, the decision could not be overturned, despite suggestions that the decision was soft.

However, James, who won a penalty for United away to Norwich at the weekend with the assistance of VAR, was in no doubt that Tierney's original decision was right.

"100 per cent a penalty, yeah," James told MUTV.

James hailed Marcus Rashford's match-winning contribution at Stamford Bridge after the England forward scored a penalty and a free-kick in the 2-1 win.

Of Rashford's wonderful free-kick, James said: "If you see the pictures of my face when it went in... It was a great free-kick. He practices on the training field every day. I know some of them have not gone his way this season. It shows the hard work he's put in behind the scenes.

"You see it in normal play, with the way that he shoots, that's what he did for the free-kick."

And on Rashford scoring from the spot in the first half having missed from 12 yards against Norwich, James added: "He missed a pen last week but he's come here today with great courage to take it again, unbelievable character to get that first goal.

"It was important. We all believe in him. We were never going to change the penalty taker. It was about going, 'get the next one, can you score?' and he did that today."
