Manchester United football director John Murtough impressing in meetings

Manchester United's new hierarchy is impressing the club's contacts as they continue with business in the transfer window.

Sources have told the Manchester Evening News that the United football director John Murtough and technical director Darren Fletcher have impressed during meetings ahead of the new season.

United have expanded their player care infrastructure and Murtough is responsible for communicating the strategy of the club beyond transfer window dealings.

Murtough was installed as the football director in March partly due to his experience of jointly running the academy and recruiting for the women's team in 2018.

Players have also spoken highly of Murtough, who has been at United for seven-and-a-half years. Fletcher officially returned to the club in January but was privy to plans for United's resrtucture two years ago.

United sources have described Murtough as a 'fixer' and the 'leader' at the training complex but he does not oversee the club's recruitment, with the director of football negotiations Matt Judge still the point of contact to discuss a prospective target's terms.

The recruitment process is still largely overseen by manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the technical chief scout Mick Court, as well as his team in the recruitment department.

Fletcher has continued to assist Solskjaer and his coaching staff in training sessions and sits with the analysts during matches.

The latest addition to United's structure was Justin Cochrane, who replaced Nicky Butt as the head of first-team player development.
