Manchester United floodlights plan falls through forcing club into rethink

kilwinning Rangers have been forced into a rethink on floodlights after a bid to buy Manchester United's old ones fell through.

The Buffs agreed to buy a lighting system - once a part of the set-up at the Red Devils’ former training ground The Cliff - from York City back in April.

But with York staff furloughed due to the coronavirus pandemic, completing the deal proved problematic and Kilwinning have instead decided to purchase a new eight-pole LED system.

The club say the increased cost means the project will be over two years rather than one.

But they insist it will be easier to install and more future proof. The poles will be delivered in four weeks allowing the club to begin the planning stage with North Ayrshire Council.

Kilwinning are set to enter the SFA pyramid system next season in a new West of Scotland League at tier 6.

Floodlights are a requirement for an SFA club licence which would allow the Buffs to compete in the senior Scottish Cup.

Without them, Buffs can not win promotion to the Lowland League.

A club spokesman said they were not sure if licensing could happen this year regardless, but added: "If we get further sponsorship for the lights then they could be completed by March if licensing is going ahead, lots of options."

Kilwinning would like to thank sponsor Chris McMail of Microtech who has helped fund the floodlights project; JBS Joiners and Strathcyle Demolition for offering to sponsor a lighting column and Archer Dean Electrical and RS Cable Services for their offer to help with the cabling and installation of the columns.

If any company or person would like to sponsor a column or a new LED light (32 in total) please contact Colin Evans on 07713 220084.
