Why did United sign Van de Beek?

After a handful of starts over the last 13 months, the question regularly asked with regards to Donny van de Beek is why did Manchester United sign him?

The Dutchman was shortlisted as an option for United in the playmaker role in January of last year, before the signing of Bruno Fernandes, but top of their wish list was Jack Grealish.

However, due to the financial impact of covid a deal with Aston Villa failed to materialise, Van de Beek was expected to sign for Real Madrid but the Spanish giants decided against the transfer because of the pandemic.

With Borussia Dortmund refusing to budge on Jadon Sancho’s asking price and Ajax keen to maximise Van de Beek’s dwindling resale value, the Netherlands international was offered to United.

Maguire injury update

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has claimed he will be ‘back on the pitch soon’ as he continues his recovery from a calf injury he suffered last month.

The United skipper has been out of action since picking up the injury during September's defeat to Aston Villa, and was not part of Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the recent international break.

Maguire remains a doubt for Saturday’s trip to Leicester but speaking to club media about his setback he revealed he is yet to take part in training since the injury but hopes to be back soon.

“Yeah it's getting there,” Maguire told United Daily

Where does Rashford fit in?

Manchester United are set to welcome Marcus Rashford back from injury when they travel to Leicester City on Saturday.

The 23-year-old has been out of action for almost three months after undergoing shoulder surgery but is closing in on a return to the first team after impressing in recent training sessions.

Rashford scored twice in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Blackburn last week and is understood to be in contention to travel with the squad to the King Power Stadium this weekend.
