Manchester United fan favourite Dimitar Berbatov has revealed he told Man City to "f*** off" when they tried to sign him before he made his move to Old Trafford.
Berbatov completed his £30million switch from Tottenham Hotspur to United on transfer deadline day in the summer of 2008 and went on to achieve great success at the club.
It could have been a lot different, however, as on the other side of Manchester on the same day City had just smashed their transfer record to sign Robinho after being taken over by Sheikh Mansour.
Berbatov claims that the newly minted City attempted to hijack the deal at the last moment to get Berbatov in blue instead of red but the striker only had his eyes on one move.
"Well it was close and not close," the Bulgarian told Betfair.
"Because my agent told me they are coming for me and they want to sign me.
"And I said okay, thank you, now f*** off."
Berbatov went on to spend four years at United, winning three Premier Leagues, two League Cups, a Club World Cup and a golden boot, while scoring 56 goals and adding 27 assists in 149 appearances.
The now retired striker went on to explain why he was adamant on moving to United rather than City.
"Manchester United are history. The manager, the titles, the players, the stadium, everything.
"This is what I wanted because sometimes you are getting in love with the history of something, with the past, you say I want to be a part of the futute.
"And I still think it was the right choice for me to do and I will never regret it because it was something magical."
