It's been a hard time to be a Manchester United fan over the past few years. Not only has the club failed to win a trophy for five years and the league title for nearly a decade, Manchester City and Liverpool have also been dominating both domestically and in Europe.
Liverpool have won the Premier League and the Champions League in the last five years, whereas City have not triumphed in Europe but have won the league three times, and in the 2017-18 season they smashed the all-time points record with 100. There have also been a number of other trophies achieved during this time as well for both teams.
A large part of this has been down to the quality of their two managers. Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola have both built their respective dynasties from the ground up with heavy backing from the club.

And it is the exploits of Guardiola and Klopp that have finally forced United into action, with the club appointing Erik ten Hag on a three-year deal. Now the club must also follow City and Liverpool's examples by giving the Dutchman the time and support he needs.
And many United fans were hoping that Ten Hag's team would be ready to compete just as Guardiola and Klopp left the league. The Spaniard's contract expires in 2023 at City and the German's the following year at Liverpool.
However, that now might not be the case as The Times reported that Liverpool were looking to open talks with Klopp about extending his contract at Anfield, while The Athletic claims Klopp will indeed extended his contract to 2026.
There have not yet been any indications from Klopp that he would sign a new contract, as he has previously stated that he may look for a new challenge when his contract expires in 2024. But given the form his team are in he could be persuaded.
This would spell bad news for United as its Liverpool side has been dominant and an unchallenged Klopp if Guardiola chooses not to renew could run riot and allow Liverpool to overtake the club's 20 league titles. Ten Hag would have a serious task on his hands.
United fans have been giving their thoughts on social media. Some are worried about the news of Klopp's potential extension while others believe that Ten Hag may have what it takes to topple him:
