Manchester United fans troll Paul Merson after Harry Maguire prediction backfires

Harry Maguire's imperious Manchester United debut against Chelsea has prompted fans to troll pundit Paul Merson for his verdict on their centre-back signing.

The former Arsenal and England star, turned Sky Sports pundit, hit the headlines pre-match as he lambasted United for paying a "ridiculous" £80million — a world record fee, for a defender — to land Maguire from Leicester City.

Maguire then proved Merson and other doubters wrong as he helped United keep a clean sheet, their first in 16 competitive matches, against Chelsea en route to a comfortable 4-0 victory.

United fans took great pleasure in going back to Merson's comments, as they believe Maguire will become a fulcrum of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's defence for years to come. The 26-year-old won Man Of The Match and did not concede a single foul during the game.

"I worry for United," Merson had said. "I don't see any good (transfer) business here. Harry Maguire at £80million is ridiculous. Ridiculous at the highest level.

"He ripped it up with England because he played in a three. You play three at the back for one reason — your defenders ain't good enough because you don't trust them.

"When he played at Leicester, they drop back on their box, they defend, he heads it out. He kicks off now with Man United and you're on the halfway line. All of a sudden balls are going over the top for Aubameyang or Aguero."

Here's what United fans said after the Chelsea game:
