Manchester United fans troll Lionel Messi in Barcelona Champions League game

Manchester United supporters sang 'Viva Ronaldo' at Lionel Messi during the Reds' Champions League quarter-final first leg.

The Argentine superstar made just his second domestic appearance at Old Trafford on Wednesday night and United supporters sought to ensure his evening in Manchester was uncomfortable by reminding him of their affection for former United favourite Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo and Messi have gone toe-to-toe for recognition as the world's greatest player over the past decade.

Chris Smalling said 'bring it on' when asked how he felt about the prospect of facing Messi ahead of the game and the United centre-back left his mark on the forward with a firm aerial challenge in the first half. Messi received treatment on the touchline for a bloodied nose and United supporters serenaded the forward with a noisy rendition of their homage to Ronaldo.

Luis Suarez's 13th-minute header was turned in by an unknowing Luke Shaw before the left-back picked up a yellow card for a foul on Messi that will keep him out of Tuesday's second leg at the Camp Nou.
