Manchester United fans tip youngster for squad promotion

Manchester United fans are eager to see Angel Gomes handed more opportunities in the first team after the international break.

United face a hectic fixture schedule when their players return from international duty, with Premier League games against Leicester City, West Ham, Arsenal and Newcastle United and Europa League and League Cup commitments in between.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is sure to hand opportunities to youngsters and use the breadth of his squad.

Gomes has so far been included only in United's travelling parties for games, but not yet named on the bench by Solskjaer — although he impressed in pre-season and when playing for the club's Under-23s.

And United fans, in response to a poll by MEN Sport asking: "Solskjaer has picked Mason Greenwood on the bench so far this season. But which of these youngsters should United call into their squad next?" chose Gomes by a big majority.

The other options were Tahith Chong and James Garner, given that Greenwood has already been in contention while other United youngsters continue to wait for their chances.

Chong only polled 12 per cent of the vote, while Garner got 14 per cent and 1 per cent selected 'other', with the candidates including Welsh midfielder Dylan Levitt and right-footed left-back Brandon Williams.

Whether Gomes gets an opportunity after the international break remains to be seen, however, given that Juan Mata remains ahead of him in the United pecking order and Jesse Lingard has also played in the No.10 spot.

But Solskjaer's 4-2-3-1 system ought to favour Gomes, who has just turned 19 and made his senior debut way back in 2017 under Jose Mourinho in a season finale clash with Crystal Palace.
