Manchester United fans split on Antonio Conte to Spurs links after Nuno Espirito Santo sacking

Manchester United fans are split on the possibility of the club losing out on Antonio Conte to Tottenham.

Spurs have sacked manager Nuno Espirito Santo after just four months at the helm following Saturday's 3-0 defeat to United, with Conte being inserted as the early favourite.

Reports claim that the Italian has already held talks with the North London club and that a deal is close to being struck.

It was only last week that it emerged Conte was open to heading to Old Trafford, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's job hung in the balance following the 5-0 humiliation at the hands of Liverpool.

MEN Sport understands that the club did consider sacking Solskjaer and that Conte would be interested in the role, though some high-ranking figures within the club are 'not keen' on him.

Instead, Solskjaer was granted a stay of execution and his team responded well by hammering Spurs at the weekend, which has led to Espirito Santo's dismissal.

However, with Conte now edging towards Tottenham, United look likely to miss out on another elite-level manager as they persevere with the Norwegian.

Some United fans are devastated to be missing out on Conte, while others believe he wouldn't have been the right fit for the club.

Upon the sacking of Espirito Santo, Spurs' managing director of football, Fabio Paaratici, said: "I know how much Nuno and his coaching staff wanted to succeed and I regret that we have had to take this decision.

“Nuno is a true gentleman and will always be welcome here. We should like to thank him and his coaching staff and wish them well for the future.”
