Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's tenure did not end how he wanted, but the club's fans showed their admiration for the manager in the first game since his sacking.
United this evening begin life without the Norwegian with a tough away test against Villarreal in their penultimate Champions League group game.
Michael Carrick took charge of the side for the first time in a caretaker role as the club begin their search for Solskjaer's successor.
United are confident they can appoint Mauricio Pochettino as the PSG boss is interested in the role and keen to make a return to the Premier League.
Ernesto Valverde has also been contacted about taking on the job on an interim basis, following United’s statement that they would be looking to make a temporary appointment before hiring on a permanent basis in the summer.
For the time being though, attentions remain on the pitch as United look to secure their qualification for the knockout stages of the Champions League.
And fans who made the trip to Spain wasted no time showing their support for Solskjaer, referencing his famous winning goal in the 1999 Champions League final.
To the tune of “Oh what a night”, fans could be heard singing: “Oh what a night; Late in May in 1999; Ole scored a goal in Fergie time; What a feeling, what a night.”
The song has proven a popular choice among supporters over the years, particularly during Solskjaer’s time in charge.
And, despite his departure as manager, United fans are clearly keen to carry on singing about their legendary striker.
