Manchester United fans send Solskjaer transfer message after Bruno Fernandes signs new contract

Many Manchester United fans have reacted to the news that Bruno Fernandes has signed a new Sporting Lisbon contract by voicing their desire for the club to sign James Maddison.

Portuguese playmaker Fernandes was heavily linked with a move to United over the summer, though MEN Sport understands the Old Trafford club at no stage made him a priority target. The club sought to distance themselves from links to Fernandes.

But as the 25-year-old penned a new contract with Sporting — for whom he's scored eight goals in 14 appearances this season — it prompted a big reaction from United supporters.

Upon signing the new deal, he told Sporting's website: "It's a pride for me and a recognition of my work; it's a sign that I'm doing things well.

"I have been trying my best to do what is best for the club. It is for what I did on the pitch, but also showed that I liked Sporting CP and took pride in representing the club I represent.

"For me it is, and always will be, a privilege to be here and be able to wear the Sporting CP jersey.

"You can expect more and better. I promise the same delivery and dedication so we can have more moments of glory as we had last season."

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side came closing to signing Christian Eriksen in the summer, as they look to bring more creativity to their midfield. Leicester star Maddison is now among their top targets, though it appears unlikely that United will be able to recruit the England international in the upcoming January window.

United fans reacted to the Fernandes news by touting Maddison as a target. Here's what they said on social media:
