Manchester United fans send message to Edwin Van der Sar after Donny Van de Beek letter

Manchester United fans have once again asked Edwin van der Sar to return to the club in a boardroom role following his touching open letter to supporters about the signing of Donny van de Beek.

United made Van de Beek their first signing of the summer on Wednesday after securing the 23-year-old on a five-year deal, with the option for a further year, and paying £40.1million to Ajax.

Van de Beek came through the famed Ajax academy and rose up the ranks in Amsterdam before establishing himself as one of Europe's most exciting playmakers.

The Dutchman especially made his name in Ajax's run to the Champions League semi-finals in the 2018/19 season, in which he scored or assisted against Bayern Munich, Juventus, Real Madrid and Tottenham.

Van der Sar has been the CEO of the Eredivisie giants since late 2016 and watched Van de Beek blossom into a fine attacking midfielder so it's of little surprise that he wants to see him succeed at the club he spent the last six years of his career at.

In an open letter written in the MEN, the former goalkeeper asked United fans to 'please take good care of our Donny' as he spoke of his pride in the player after making the move.

United fans were left seriously impressed by the letter and have, not for the first time, asked for Van der Sar to return to Old Trafford in some capacity, be it CEO or Director of Football.

Van de Beek is expected to meet up with his new United teammates next week following the Netherlands' Nations League matches against Poland and Italy.

He has chosen to wear the No.34 shirt at Old Trafford in honour of his friend and former teammate Abdelhak Nouri, who collapsed during a pre-season game against Werder Bremen in 2017 and suffered a cardiac arrhythmia attack.
