Manchester United fans ridicule Jurgen Klopp over Liverpool penalty gripe

Manchester United fans have ridiculed Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp after his comments on refereeing decisions in the wake of their defeat against Southampton.

Liverpool's poor form has given United the opportunity to overtake the reigning Premier League champions by winning their game in hand against Burnley.

United were victorious last time out thanks to a Bruno Fernandes penalty after Paul Pogba was fouled in the box by Douglas Luiz. The decision to award a spot-kick was slammed on social media by rival supporters but replays show clear contact on the Frenchman's trailing leg.

Klopp believes Liverpool should have been awarded a penalty for a foul on Sadio Mane by Kyle Walker-Peters during their 1-0 defeat to Southampton and questioned United's recent penalty record.

MEN football writers discuss the comparisons between Bruno Fernandes and Kevin De Bruyne

He said: "I hear now that Manchester United had more penalties in two years than I had in five-and-a-half years. I’ve no idea if that’s my fault, or how that can happen."

United fans believe Klopp has no leg to stand on given Liverpool still lead the Premier League penalty chart overall and have only been awarded one less spot kick than United this season.

Klopp's comments come ahead of a crucial clash between Liverpool and United at Anfield a week on Sunday, but the MEN understands he will avoid an FA censure over them.

The FA can punish managers for comments about referees in their media duties, but say they are allowed "provided they are not personal in their nature, imply bias or attack the integrity of the officials in charge of the match, or in any other respect bring the game into disrepute."

Liverpool face United at Anfield on January 17.
