Manchester United fans respond to Conor McGregor takeover claim

Manchester United fans have laughed off suggestions from Conor McGregor that he would be able to do "big thing's" if he bought the club.

McGregor previously claimed he was "thinking about" buying Manchester United on the same day Ed Woodward resigned as chief executive following the Super League fallout.

The former UFC world champion is a well-known United fan and since his initial tweet, supporters have protested heavily against the Glazers' ownership, causing their Premier League fixture with Liverpool to be postponed.

More demonstrations are planned as United fans campaign for the German 50+1 model that would give fans input into important decisions for the club's future.

After a Q&A on Twitter, McGregor reaffirmed his desire to buy United: "A conversation came up regarding Celtic first to be honest. To acquire shares from Dermot Desmond.

"I am certainly interested in acquiring a sports team at some stage! Both Celtic and Man United are teams I like for sure.

"But I am open. I feel I could do big things for a club."

However, United fans have voiced their scepticism over McGregor's wealth, with Forbes reporting the Irishman netted $48M in 2020, which would be the cost of one summer signing.

Joel Glazer has been in touch with the Manchester United Supporters Trust, responding to a strongly worded letter following the collapse of the Super League, days before the mass protests at Old Trafford.

Glazer's claim that: "In particular, I want to acknowledge the need for change, with deeper consultation with you as our main fan representative body across a range of important issues, including the competitions we play in," was met with cynicism from fans.
