Manchester United fans react with relief and joy after Ed Woodward resigns

Manchester United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has resigned.

The resignation comes amid plans announced late on Sunday night for United to join the European Super League, and the proposal has been widely condemned and met with intense backlash from supporters.

While the Manchester Evening News can confirm Woodward has tendered his resignation, he will stay in his role until the end of 2021.

That will signal the end of Woodward's 16-year employment at Old Trafford, in which he advanced from a "financial planning" role to heading up United's commercial operations as their executive vice-chairman.

Woodward was a hugely unpopular figure among United fans and it's therefore unsurprising that the news has been warmly welcomed.

Fans have flocked to social media to have their say on the resignation.

The news broke after Manchester City and Chelsea told organisers they do not wish to be part of the European Super League, and now the pressure is increasing on United to follow their fellow Premier League rebels.
