Manchester United fans react in the same way after Sean Longstaff transfer rumour

A transfer rumour linking Manchester United with a move for Newcastle United midfielder has been met with despondency from United fans on social media.

Sky Sports have reported United's apparent interest in the 21-year-old, who has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign at St James' Park.

Longstaff played nine games for Rafa Benitez's side after being drafted into the squad halfway through the season, scoring once, before his campaign was cut short by a knee ligament injury.

The Chronicle reports that Newcastle are not willing to sell the player, though it seems the majority of United fans aren't in favour of a move in any case...

This is how they reacted to the rumour on social media:

United are interested in young homegrown players this summer, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to revamp a squad that finished sixth in the Premier League and failed to secure Champions League football for next season.

Jamie Redknapp compared Longstaff to United great Michael Carrick earlier in the season.

“He’s done a great job," said Redknapp. "He’s got experience going out on loan and I just think he’s growing into this position he’s got now. He’s well-organised, he’s got good feet - right foot, left foot - very comfortable on the ball and he’s played in big games.

“He reminds me a little bit of Michael Carrick. He’s got that nice stance and the way he plays, always looking to pass the ball to a black and white shirt. He has got a nice pass from either foot. That’s a massive asset to have and he can score goals as well.

“He’s very down to earth. He looks like a bright kid, he’s got good pedigree - his day was an Ice hockey international and his uncle is Alan Thompson so that’s great.

“Hopefully he can stay in the team because the Geordies love a local player.”
