Manchester United fans react as Wayne Rooney returns to English football with Derby County

Manchester United fans have welcomed club legend Wayne Rooney back to English football, after he took to social media to post a message upon his arrival at Derby County.

United's all-time leading goalscorer has been on quite a journey since leaving Old Trafford in 2017, spending a year with boyhood club Everton before moving to MLS franchise D.C. United.

While he had two years remaining on his contract in the American capital, it was confirmed in July that he would be leaving to join Derby in January in a player-coach role.

Unable to play with the Rams until the New Year due to FIFA rules, Rooney will spend the first few months of his stint in the EFL coaching a side who have struggled for form so far this term.

Rooney has signed a 18-month deal at Derby and, ahead of this weekend's clash with QPR where he could be in attendance, he took to social media to share his delight at joining a new side.

"Delighted to have finally started with @DCFCOfficial. Looking forward to the new challenge ahead," he posted, alongside a video of him training with his new team.

That sparked responses from fans across the globe, many of whom were United fans and wasted no time in sharing good luck messages to a club legend.
