Ander Herrera looks set to keep the number 21 at Paris Saint-Germain.
The Basque midfielder has not yet been announced as a PSG player following his departure from United but it is no secret that he will play for the French champions next season.
United were confident of keeping hold of Herrera as recently as March but the club dawdled over a new contract and his head was turned by the offer on the table at PSG.
"This is not an easy day or an easy decision, but sometimes in life you have to take decisions," Herrera told the United website upon the confirmation of his departure in May. "Sometimes the timing is just not right and you have to move on."
Herrera's move to PSG will surely be confirmed sooner rather than later and on Wednesday the club accidentally revealed his shirt number by briefly making 'Herrera 21' available as an option for fans to get printed on the back of the new home shirt.
Plenty of United fans on Twitter were saddened to be reminded of Herrera's exit.
