Manchester United fans react as Liverpool close in on Thiago Alcantara transfer

Manchester United fans have reacted with mixed emotions to the news that Liverpool are closing in on a deal to sign Thiago Alcantara.

Whilst United were not in for the Bayern Munich star this summer contrary to reports, and it is understood that their name was used by Thiago's representatives as a way to try and speed Liverpool into doing a deal, there is still sadness from some fans at seeing such a talented player go to Anfield.

With the price said to be around £25m, some United fans have questioned why the club opted against pursuing him.

Bayern Munich manager Hansi Flick congratulated Liverpool on Thursday for landing Thiago.

"Thiago is an extraordinary player and was very important for us," said Flick at a press conference ahead of Friday's Bundesliga clash with Schalke which will herald the start of the new German season. "My coaching team and I enjoyed working with him. It was very emotional as we said goodbye. I can only congratulate Liverpool as they got a great player and especially a great person. Thiago gave the team a lot of options and made us unpredictable, he solved things in ways you don't expect. Now we're losing yet another great player."
