Manchester United fans pass Celtic legend's quote off as their own

"Football without fans is nothing".

A famous quote attributed to legendary Celtic manager Jock Stein. It's a slightly abridged version of the full quote, which reads: "Without fans who pay at the turnstile, football is nothing."

Either way, Jock Stein's the one who said it.

Unless, that is, you're a Manchester United fan, in which case Sir Matt Busby said it.

A display has been unveiled at the club's Stretford End stand reading: "FOOTBALL IS NOTHING WITHOUT FANS".

Not in itself a controversial statement, but below it are the words "SIR MATT BUSBY".

United fan @RickMc0161 tweeted: "United asked what we'd like to see in the Stret for the remaining games of the season.

"We suggested they send a heartfelt message to show just how much the club, players and manager value their match-going supporters.

"Sir Matt Busby said it best: 'FOOTBALL IS NOTHING WITHOUT FANS'."

Celtic fans were quick to point out the inaccuracy, with @TrumpFragile saying: "It was the immortal Jock Stein who uttered them" and @tonka_timmy saying: "Sir Matt Busby said no such thing and ould be embarrassed to have that quote, by his great friend Jock Stein, attributed to him."

Fans will be hoping United players are inspired by the quote tonight when they take on Sheffield United at Celtic Park.
