Manchester United fans notice what Harry Maguire said to Shola Shoretire during Newcastle win

Harry Maguire has been praised by Manchester United fans for the encouraging gesture he made towards Shola Shoretire on his Premier League debut.

The 17-year-old academy prospect was summoned from the bench by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer during the closing stages of Sunday night's 3-1 victory against Newcastle United.

Goals from Marcus Rashford, Daniel James and Bruno Fernandes settled the scores in favour of United at Old Trafford, a result which moved them back up to second place in the Premier League table.

Shoretire's cameo marked another positive sign for Solskjaer as the manager continues to provide a glimpse into the future - days after handing January signing Amad his first appearance in the resounding 4-0 victory against Real Sociedad in the Europa League.

After replacing one of his idols in Rashford, the lively Shoretire was thrust straight into action against Newcastle.

After being introduced in the 89th minute, he raced out to close down Emil Kraft in a late move that saw substitute Jacob Murphy fire over.

It was a decision prompted by Maguire's call of "go, go, go" that was picked up by the BT Sport cameras - with the United captain then applauding United's latest debutant, much to the pleasure of the club's supporters.

In a post made on Reddit, user @msoccer2 said: "After just coming on, Shoretire closes down the ball on the edge of the box then blocks the passing lane.

"Maguire immediately applauds him when the play is over. Thought this was great from the captain."

The same user added: "I thought it deserved a shoutout with the amount of hate Maguire gets about the captaincy from some people."
