Manchester United fans name nine players who should be sold in transfer window

Manchester United supporters have urged the club to offload nine players during this summer's transfer window.

In what could be a busy window for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the United hierarchy, fans have named Juan Mata, Joel Pereira, Lee Grant, Jesse Lingard, Andreas Pereira, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Chris Smalling and Alexis Sanchez as players who ought to be surplus to requirements.

It came in response to an article by MEN Sport which asked fans to choose which players in the current squad should be kept for next season and which ones should be sold. All nine of the aforementioned names received a 'keep rate' of less than 50 per cent.

Centre-backs Rojo and Jones were the two on which most agreed should be sold, with only six per cent of supporters saying they should be kept. Then came Chilean forward Sanchez with around eight per cent, midfielder Pereira on 16.8 per cent and Roma loanee Smalling on 17.8 per cent.

More than 20 per cent of fans wanted the club to hang onto Lingard and around 30 per cent for reserve goalkeepers Grant and Joel Pereira.

Playmaker Mata split opinion somewhat among fans but less than 40 per cent believe he should be kept. The experienced Spaniard has only one year remaining on his Old Trafford contract., although the club has the option to extend his deal by a further year.

Diogo Dalot was another who divided the crowd, but just about won 50 per cent of the vote. It remains to be seen whether Solskjaer makes a potentially ruthless decision on the young full-back.

In terms of the players United fans most want to keep at the club, it was no surprise to see young hotshot forward Mason Greenwood top the list, with 98.1 per cent of supporters wanting him to stay. Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford all came high up the rankings.

Fans can still vote here. It remains to be seen how United will act in terms of trimming their squad this summer.

A year ago, Solskjaer sanctioned loan departures for Smalling and Sanchez, while Antonio Valencia, Ander Herrera, Matteo Darmian and Romelu Lukaku all departed permanently. The Norwegian has also sold Ashley Young and Marouane Fellaini in his time in charge of United.
