Manchester United fans name biggest January transfer priority

Manchester United fans believe the club must prioritise central midfield in the January transfer window.

United did not sign a central midfielder in the summer, despite the departure of Ander Herrera upon the expiry of his contract and that of Maroaune Fellaini to the Chinese Super League in January.

There was interest in Newcastle United's Sean Longstaff, among others, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was not able to get a deal over the line to add to the arrivals of Daniel James, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who were the only three additions.

United's midfield has looked a little short of options in the season so far, with Solskjaer playing Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba in a two-man midfield.

Although Andreas Pereira has played there, with Nemanja Matic, Fred and youngster James Garner further options for United, supporters firmly believe that they need a January reinforcement.

Responding to a MEN Sport poll which asked the question: "What position should Manchester United look to target in January?" more than 70 per cent, of more than 8,000 to respond, chose central midfield as the biggest priority.

The other options were left back (which gained four per cent of the vote), right-wing (seven per cent) and striker, which was the next highest with 18 per cent. United allowed Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez to both leave the club for Inter Milan over the summer and did not replace either player.

Solskjaer will ask plenty of Garner, Mason Greenwood, Angel Gomes and Tahith Chong between now and January but there is the sense that United will need to strengthen their squad in the notoriously tricky January window.
