Manchester United fans make Nemanja Vidic claim over Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk

Manchester United may not be in action on the Premier League's opening weekend but that hasn't stopped fans on social media from reigniting the rivalry with Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp's side kicked-off the defence of their title with a dramatic 4-3 victory over newly-promoted Leeds United at Anfield.

Liverpool were certainly given a stern challenge by the Whites, who netted three equalisers before Mohamed Salah sealed a hat-trick and all three points with a late penalty.

Amid all the discussions around the entertainment, United fans zoned in on the performance of Liverpool stalwart Van Dijk.

The Netherlands defender admittedly did not have the finest of performances, with a rare error allowing Patrick Bamford to score Leeds' second of the match.

But he scored the Reds' second goal and was arguably unlucky to have another disallowed in the second half.

While it's fair to say that Van Dijk has rarely put a foot wrong throughout his time on Merseyside, United fans took the opportunity to pile in with their thoughts.

Plenty took to social media to issue the same point about former defender Nemanja Vidic, claiming that he is a superior player to Liverpool's prized defender.

Van Dijk, a current world and Premier League champion with the Reds, was the runner up for the Ballon d'Or award in 2019.

He has been named in the Premier League team of the season for the last two campaigns.

And he scooped the PFA Players' Player of the Year award for 2018/19.
