Manchester United fans loved Sir Alex Ferguson's reaction to Tranmere win

Manchester United scored six goals in a game for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson was in charge - and the club legend himself was sat in the stands at Prenton Park to see the landmark win over Tranmere.

On a poor pitch, United raced into a three goal lead after just 16 minutes thanks to goals from Harry Maguire, Diogo Dalot and Jesse Lingard. Phil Jones and Anthony Martial made it five before half time - a scoreline United had not managed in the first half since 2001 in a 6-1 win over Arsenal.

In fact, it was only the second time United had scored five in a domestic game since Ferguson retired, and the records continued in the second half when Mason Greenwood's penalty made it six. That meant the Tranmere game was the first time United had scored six in a game since the 8-2 victory over Arsenal in 2011.

The productive afternoon on the Wirral was made more special by the fact Ferguson was present to watch, and fans were delighted to see him in good spirits when TV cameras showed him laughing and joking with the score at 4-0.
