Manchester United fans laud Anthony Elanga's performance vs Aston Villa

Manchester United's supporters have hailed Anthony Elanga's first half performance against Aston Villa at Villa Park this evening.

The youngster, who stepped off the bench against Villa in the FA Cup third-round on Monday evening, was handed his first Premier League start of the season, filling in for the absent Marcus Rashford.

Starting on the left of United's front-three, the young Sweden international was desperate to showcase the tricks and entertainment he brought to the fore against Villa just five days ago, with his cameo role under the Old Trafford lights attracting plenty of praise.

Following Bruno Fernandes' early opener, which came as a result of Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez letting the Portuguese star's effort slip through his fingers, United were playing with a sense of confidence and control, with Elanga seeing plenty of the ball on the left hand side.

Quick and direct, Elanga was looking to run at Villa right-back Matty Cash at every opportunity possible and get United higher up the pitch, before frequently looking to pick out Edinson Cavani in the middle.

With Rashford having struggled for form of late, United have been in need of a fresh outlet in the final third of the pitch and Elanga's first half showing at Villa Park suggests that Ralf Rangnick may have found one.

Below, MEN Sport has taken a close look at a sample of what some of United's supporters were saying about Elanga's performance in the opening 45 minutes.

As you can see from the messages displayed in the tweets above, United's supporters have been impressed by Elanga's showing in the opening 45, insisting that he has justified his inclusion in the starting line-up.

As well as looking to drive at Cash when on the ball, he has also linked-up well with Alex Telles down the left, with the Brazilian and the winger often interchanging passes.

With Rashford missing out as a result of a dead leg, as confirmed by Rangnick ahead of kick-off, Elanga will be hoping that he does enough to retain his place in the German's plans ahead of Wednesday's trip to Brentford.
