Manchester United fans in meltdown over Aston Villa friendly ahead of Crystal Palace clash

Crystal Palace got their Premier League campaign underway with an impressive win over one the form teams from the end of last season in Southampton.

The Saints finished the 2019/20 season with a seven-game unbeaten streak and had won the last two clashes between the sides at Selhurst Park.

However, a Wilfried Zaha goal was enough to seal all three points for Palace against Ralph Hasenhuttl's side.

Next up is a Carabao Cup clash against Bournemouth on Tuesday, followed by a trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United on Saturday evening.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side are not in action this weekend following their continued participation in the Europa League at the end of last season.

And their preparations aren't exactly going to plan, with United losing a pre-season friendly against Aston Villa this afternoon.

Dean Smith's side beat the Red Devils 1-0 at Villa Park in their final friendly before the start of the new season, with new signing Ollie Watkins grabbing the only goal of the game.

Plenty of United fans were left fuming at their final warm-up game of the season, with Palace looming on the horizon.

Rron_ldn : “Our beloved club is in the mud.”

Viiro : “Its going to be a long season ahead...”

Alex Holland : “I do hope this United team is not our 1st team.”

Adam : “It’s fine was just a warm up game.”

Chico : “Our second 11 is utter garbage, who would've thought.”

Utd_Shane : “10th place finish with 0 trophies is coming soon sigh.”

Palace have been struggling with a number of injuries, but Roy Hodgson gave a hint of positive news to come for the United clash.

"I think Jairo Riedewald's injury is a muscle strain," Hodgson told reporters. "Normally when we get a muscle strain it's a grade three with tendon involved and it leaves people out for months - we don't think it will keep Jairo out for quite so long.

"We'll have another week working with Michy and Eberechi Eze which will also be a great advantage to us. There's some talk of Christian Benteke coming back and joining us in training at the latter end of the week. I think that'll probably mean it will be too early to take part in the game.

"Sakho, who's had one training session on Friday, which wasn't a hard one as it was the day before a game. He'll be training with the rest of us on Monday, so he'll have another week's work behind him.

"So it's gradually improving in that respect, but we'll still have five or six players unavailable and a further two or three who need more work and game time."
