Manchester United fans identify Ole Gunnar Solskjaer tactic that's finally paying off

Manchester United fans believe Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's desire for his team to press high up the pitch is finally working, after their 3-1 win at Norwich City.

The game was notable for penalty misses from United strikers Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial, though both also found the net, with Scott McTominay opening the scoring.

It was arguably United's best performance of the campaign since their opening day 4-0 destruction of Chelsea and it saw United implement a tactic that Solskjaer has been eager to see for a while.

The Norwegian stepped up United's fitness work over the summer and spoke after a 1-0 pre-season win over Inter Milan about the need to press high.

"We've got players who like to press and be on the front foot," he said in July.

"I don't know how many times Jesse [Lingard] won the ball but he's one of the best ones at that pressing football. Marcus [Rashford] is also very good at it and you could see Anthony [Martial] working hard and winning a few balls for us. It was very encouraging.”

Although United's performances and results have, until recently, been largely poor this season, Solskjaer has been impressed with the pressing.

"Against Newcastle we had 75 per cent possession but [we] can’t carve that opening," he said. "The pressing up high has been very good, all the attitude and desire has been good but not enough chances have been created – and, chances haven’t been taken.

"Sometimes that’s confidence; that’s human nature – you see players missing chances they won’t normally miss. But it’s up to us to keep working and get the ball in between the posts. That goal never moves."

And against Norwich, many United fans took to social media to laud the returning Martial, as well as Fred, who they viewed as key to the tactic finally paying dividends.

Solskjaer views fitness as key to implementing the pressing and United's squad depth will be tested as this week they travel to Chelsea, in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night, and then Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday.
