Manchester United fans hijack Harry Maguire tweet to Anthony Martial after Norwich goal

Harry Maguire has jokingly thanked Anthony Martial for inadvertently setting him up for Manchester United’s winner against Norwich City.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side booked their place in the semi-finals of the FA Cup after finally overcoming the Canaries at Carrow Road on Saturday.

The game looked to be heading for penalties as the clocked ticked down in extra time, after Todd Cantwell had equalised following Odion Ighalo’s opener.

But, in the 118th minute, United finally found a way through to the last four as Maguire hooked home – although the ball did fall to him in slightly fortuitous circumstances.

Martial had looked to try and poke the ball home, but his miscue bounced back off Norwich defender Ben Godfrey and into the path of the United captain for him to score and send the visitors through.

After the game, Martial took to Twitter to congratulate Maguire on the goal, and shared a joke about the part he played in it.

Martial wrote: “Good goal Harry Maguire, with an amazing assist.”

Maguire was quick with his reply, responding: “Thanks mate, I appreciate the pass.”

United fans were quick to jump on the interaction, and share their own reactions as well.

Here's what they said:

United now go into the hat for the semi-finals, with the three remaining teams set to be decided on Sunday.

Sheffield United take on Arsenal (1pm), while Leicester City face Chelsea (4pm) and Newcastle United host Manchester City (6.30pm) for the chance to join Solskjaer’s side in the last four.

The draw for the semi-finals will be made later this evening, during half-time of the tie at St James’ Park, meaning it should take place just after 7.15pm. The semi-finals will be played at Wembley on the weekend of July 18-19, while the final is scheduled for August 1.

The ball numbers for the draw are as follows:

  1. Sheffield United or Arsenal
  2. Newcastle United or Manchester City
  3. Manchester United
  4. Leicester City or Chelsea
