Manchester United fans have predictable response to Memphis Depay tweet

Manchester United fans have pleaded with the club to re-sign Memphis Depay after the Lyon forward posed in a shirt made up of designs from his previous teams.

Depay arrived from PSV Eindhoven in 2015 for £30million with a reputation as one of the most promising young players in the Netherlands.

The forward struggled to meet expectations at Old Trafford and was unable to prove himself during his two seasons with United before he was sold to Lyon.

Since his move to France, Depay has turned his career around, becoming a key member of the Ligue 1 side's squad. The Dutchman has scored 53 goals and registered 43 assists in 134 appearances since leaving United.

Depay sent United fans into a frenzy in May last year when he was pictured wearing a classic David Beckham United shirt.

Now, a picture of the 26-year-old wearing a shirt made up from designs of all his former clubs, including United, appeared on social media.

Predictably, United fans filled his replies with calls to return to the club.

Four things played a major role in Depay's decision to leave United, according to Giels Brouwer who helped engineer his exit.

Brouwer said: "The agent of Memphis asked us to visit Memphis in Manchester where he was living at that moment.

"I went there with two colleagues and we watched a Champions League game on his couch. In our discussion about the next step in his career, he was really open about what he wanted and didn't want.

"He wanted to play "more freely", he wanted to be "important for the team" and wanted to play in a big five competition with a coach that had a clear playing style."
