Manchester United fans have midfield hope after Paul Pogba injury

The majority of Manchester United fans believe Fred is the player most capable of deputising for injured midfielder Paul Pogba.

Pogba has been ruled out of United's meeting with Leicester on Saturday with the ankle injury he sustained during the 1-1 draw with Southampton prior to the international break.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer now has the task of deciding who should start in Pogba's place against Leicester, with United targeting their first win since the opening weekend of the season.

MEN Sport ran a poll on the eve of the match, asking supporters which midfielder they think is most capable of standing in for Pogba and 52 per cent of the 2,153 responders voted for Fred.

Nineteen per cent opted for 18-year-old James Garner, with just 16 per cent plumping for Nemanja Matic.

The remaining 13 per cent selected the 'none of the above' option.

Fred has not made a matchday squad for United all season after underwhelming in his debut campaign at Old Trafford following last summer's £52million move from Shakhtar Donetsk.

Prior to United's draw with Southampton, United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said Fred will begin to feature in the weeks ahead.

"He (Fred) is fine, he’s working hard. At the moment, he’s behind Paul [Pogba], Nemanja [Matic] and Scott [McTominay]," Solskjaer said. "That’s the reason he hasn’t been involved.

"It’s the most difficult period in August to manage a big squad because there is only one game a week and everyone is fit because we’ve just had pre-season and everyone is ready to play.

"September, October, November, December is when injuries come and that’s when you play most of the games, so he will play plenty of football."
