Manchester United fans have Edwin van der Sar theory after social media hint

Could Edwin van der Sar become Manchester United's newest chief executive? Some supporters certainly think so.

After the collapsed Super League proposal, Ed Woodward tendered his resignation at United and the club will now search for his successor this summer, with legendary goalkeeper Van der Sar one of the candidates who is favourite to assume the position.

The Dutchman won four Premier League titles under Sir Alex Ferguson and duly answered the call when United needed a hero in the penalty shootout at the 2008 Champions League final before retiring and returning to Ajax to work in an executive role.

Van de Sar initially acted as Ajax's marketing director but has stood as the club's CEO for the last five years, and while the former Reds goalkeeper remains a hugely popular figure with supporters, his credentials for the United job are obvious.

Now, Van de Sar has perhaps unintentionally fueled speculation linking him with a move to Old Trafford by commemorating United's Champions League triumph in Moscow, sharing an image of himself holding the trophy with the caption 'remember the feeling?'.

While hundreds of United supporters flocked to the comments section, one fan asked 'is that a hint??' while others all asked Van de Sar to return to the club, proving just how well he's still regarded years later among the United faithful.
