Manchester United fans have captaincy suggestion after pre-season tour interview

Manchester United fans have taken to social media to suggest Scott McTominay as a potential future club captain.

It comes after how United's players were coping with a rigorous pre-season training schedule since they landed in Perth, Australia, and revealed the squad's intentions to improve on a disappointing 2018/19 campaign.

"Obviously we know that last season was nowhere near good enough for Manchester United ," he said in an interview with MUTV.

"But it is about what we do on the pitch now. It is about what standards we set on the pitch, how we go about everything on the pitch, rather than talking. So it is focus time and hopefully this season is going to be a big one for everyone involved."

It prompted some United supporters to demand take over the captaincy. The 22-year-old has only started 17 league matches in his nascent Reds' career but scored twice in the latter stages of last season to emerge as one of the few United players with credit — in the eyes of the fans, at least.

This is how fans reacted to the interview:

United have yet to appoint a new official captain after former skipper Antonio Valencia departed in the summer on the expiry of his contract. Ashley Young was the regular stand-in last season but is not guaranteed of a first team place for the coming campaign following the arrival of right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Paul Pogba has been a captain in the past, but his future at the club is up in the air, while centre-back Victor Lindelof will be a contender for the armband.
