Manchester United fans have Angel Gomes theory over Mason Greenwood celebration

Manchester United fans believe Mason Greenwood dedicated his celebration to Angel Gomes after opening the scoring against Brighton in the hope of keeping him at United.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed the club have failed to reach an agreement to extend Gomes' contract prior to the Premier League fixture against the Seagulls. The 19-year-old is set to leave the club on a free with reports suggesting Chelsea are interested in securing his signature.

As expected, Gomes was not included in the match day squad to face Brighton and Greenwood paid homage to his soon to be former teammate after scoring the first goal of the game.

The 18-year-old - who drew comparisons with Cristiano Ronaldo and Robin van Persie for his finish - celebrated by signalling the letter 'A' to the television cameras.

Fellow United youngsters James Garner and Teden Mengi also shared the image on their Instagram pages and fans think the celebration was a last gasp attempt to keep Gomes at the club.

Gomes reacted to his celebration on Instagram with a message of thanks to Greenwood.

He wrote: "No words. I love you bro. Special, special player. Thanks for the dedicated goal @MasonGreenwood." Greenwood posted his celebration picture shortly after with the caption: "A promise is a promise bro."

It seems any United fans hoping Gomes will have a change of heart must prepare for disappointment.
