Manchester United fans have Alphonso Davies transfer regret after performance for Bayern

Manchester United fans made it clear they are disappointed with the club's failure to sign Alphonso Davies after the youngster impressed on Bayern Munich's return to action on Sunday.

After weeks with no major European football due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Bundesliga returned at the weekend.

Bayern's first match back in action as they looked to extend their lead at the top of the table was against minnows Union Berlin, who are in their first season in the top flight of German football.

Hansi Flick's side managed to grind out a 2-0 victory thanks to a Robert Lewandowski penalty and a Benjamin Pavard header, but it was an arduous game lacking any real quality.

The one highlight was the continued brilliance of teenage sensation Davies, who maintained the fine form he had shown before the league's suspension as a converted left-back.

The 19-year-old was on United's radar when he was cutting his teeth in his homeland for the Vancouver Whitecaps and the club's former international scout Jorge Alvial told MEN Sport he sent at least 40 reports to United about the player and recommended signing him at a time when he was valued at just $2million.

Yet United passed up the opportunity and Davies instead joined Bayern, where he has enjoyed a breakout campaign and is now regarded as one of the best youngsters in the game.

United fans raved about his performance on Sunday but admitted they are gutted that he isn't plying his trade in Manchester.

Maddening

So good

Mistakes were made

Can always try again

That would work

We want it!

Such a blunder

Davies signed a long-term contract at Bayern in April and recently said he had no hesitation in joining the Bavaria club last year.

"I know there were rumours about England," Davies told the Daily Mail. "I know different teams had approached my agents. My full focus at the time was Vancouver and trying to get into the play-offs.

"Behind the scenes, my people were dealing with it so I didn't need to think about it a whole lot.

'"Teams approached my people and they relayed the messages to me. We sat down with Bayern Munich and as soon as I heard them, there was no hesitation that I wanted to join this team.

"I love playing for this club. Being so young and coming here so early is even more of a motivation."
