Manchester United fans go wild after Juan Mata repeats nickname for Anthony Martial

Manchester United fans loved Juan Mata's response to Anthony Martial after he scored the club's first league hat-trick since 2013.

The Frenchman netted a first-half brace during the win against Sheffield United on Wednesday before adding his third after the interval with an excellent chip.

His trio of strikes was the first hat trick of his professional career and was the first in the league for United since Robin van Persie's treble against Aston Villa seven years ago.

United moved to within two points of fourth-placed Chelsea after the win to keep their hopes of returning to the Champions League alive and also extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to 13.

Martial reacted to his hat-trick on Instagram and Mata labelled him the 'French Ronaldo' in the comments.

It isn't the first time the Spaniard has compared his teammate to two of the most iconic forwards in football history. Back in February last year, Mata gave Martial the same nickname following his solo strike against Fulham.

He said: "Listen Anthony Martial, you are very good at playing football, you know that right? #FrenchRonaldo.”

Unsurprisingly, United supporters are a big fan of the nickname as they made clear on Instagram.

  • @Timo889: "You are right Juan Mata."
  • @rhaydden: "Absolutely."
  • @shaneskellyhd: "French Martial! There will only be one and it's our one!"
  • @bertradnandlescot: "Is that what you told him coming out the dressing room? Haha!"
  • @salmankh6: "More like Ronaldo is the Portuguese Martial."

Martial revealed he aims to score more after taking his tally for the season to a career-best 19 against the Blades.

Mata wasn't the only United player to congratulate Martial

He told MUTV : "I think the last one was a very good goal, but the first two were two goals like a real No. 9 and I know the manager is happy with these.

"I feel very good, it’s my first hat-trick in my career, I hope I will score more, the team played very good today."
