Manchester United fans give overwhelming verdict in player of the season vote

Manchester United fans have given a clear indication who they believe should be named as the club’s player of the season.

Supporters will want to forget the 2021/22 campaign as quickly as possible. A sixth-placed Premier League finish, an FA Cup loss to Middlesbrough and a last-16 Champions League exit is far from what they envisaged in August.

A lack of cohesion on the pitch that started under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer inflated under his interim replacement. Ralf Rangnick was unable to achieve his main goal of earning a top-four finish but will now move ‘upstairs’ into a development role.

No player escaped the wrath of United fans amid the dismal campaign, the players even reportedly asking for their end of season awards to be postponed as a result. But some still get to hold their head high despite the trials of the past nine months.

In a Manchester Evening News poll asking them about their United player of the season, supporters were able to choose from three players. Perhaps unsurprisingly, 62.8 per cent of the 3,728 readers who voted chose Cristiano Ronaldo.

The superstar had a successful homecoming season, netting 24 goals to become the club’s top scorer. Some feel his presence in the side has affected the mood around camp while others argue that United would have been in a far worse position but for his goals.

David de Gea finished second with 36.2 per cent of the share. The Spaniard produced some fine displays this season and undoubtedly rescued results and points for his club with his jaw-dropping saves.

Bruno Fernandes received just one per cent of the vote. The midfielder netted ten times and grabbed 13 assists this season. But many feel his performances dipped as a result of Ronaldo’s arrival and many were unimpressed by his on-field attitude when United were in tricky situations.
