Manchester United surrendered an early lead to suffer defeat away to Young Boys after Jesse Lingard laid the ball on a plate for Theoson Siebatcheu to score an injury-time winner.
Lingard replaced goalscorer Cristiano Ronaldo on the 71st minute as Ole Gunnar Solskjae r looked for a winning goal. He failed to positively impact the game, remaining on the fringes as Young Boys proved too organised for United to break down.
Fans were confused about why Ronaldo was switched with 20 minutes remaining and proved vindicated as his replacement eventually gave the ball away with a sloppy backpass that Siebatcheu capitalised on.
BT Sport co-commentator Martin Keown reacted to Young Boys' winner, blaming the Englishman for a sloppy pass: "Well, well, well Lingard switches off for a moment.
"We said how inspired [Young Boys] were. They’re playing with instinct. He takes the opportunity brilliantly. Look what it means to the manager. He’s fired them up. They’ve had to wait for it all game.
"Lingard doesn’t see the player, and it’s a sloppy back pass. The finish is wonderful."
And United fans have taken to Twitter to express their fury at the performance, which could be a hark back to the poor result against Istanbul Basaksehir last season that proved decisive as United failed to qualify for the knockout stage.
United fans have attributed the defeat to several factors, mostly surrounding the dismissal of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Solskjaer's decision to substitute Ronaldo and Lingard's poor backpass.
However, if there is one certain thing, United are moving into must-win territory for the upcoming fixtures versus Villarreal and Atalanta.
United will be at home for their next two Champions League matches. They will hope the Old Trafford crowd can lift them to the type of performance United displayed in their convincing 4-1 victory over Newcastle United on the weekend.
